The Prescription of Empathy: How Dr. Ashwini Dash is Rebuilding the Bridge of Trust in Medicine

July 2, 2025
On a day dedicated to celebrating the medical profession, National Doctor's Day, Dr. Ashwini Dash, a cosmetic surgeon from Indore, reflects on a journey that transcends the operating room with the team of Upshot Brand Media. In a world where the lines between healthcare and commerce can often blur, Dr. Ashwini Dash stands as a testament to the enduring power of empathy and integrity in the medical profession. His venture, Life Aesthetics, is more than just a clinic for cosmetic surgery and women's health; it is a sanctuary built on the foundation of trust, a principle he believes is paramount to healing.
The Genesis of a Calling
Every great journey begins with a spark. For Dr. Ashwini Dash, it was a profound fascination with the delicate interplay between science and art, form and function. This calling led him down the rigorous path of medicine, culminating in an MS in General Surgery and an MCh in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from the esteemed S.M.S. Medical College in Jaipur. His foundation was built on a deep understanding of the human body, but his ambition reached further. He wasn't just interested in mending what was broken; he wanted to restore what was lost, both physically and emotionally.
To master his craft, Dr. Dash knew he had to learn from the best. His quest for excellence took him across continents to Curitiba, Brazil—a global epicenter for cosmetic surgery. There, during a transformative fellowship, he immersed himself in the world's most advanced techniques. He learned that cosmetic surgery, at its highest level, was not about creating an artificial ideal, but about revealing the unique, inherent beauty and restoration of an individual.
The Homecoming
With a wealth of international expertise, Dr. Dash returned to Indore, his heart set on bringing world-class care to his community. He quickly distinguished himself, taking on leadership roles as the Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Choithram Hospital and later as the Chief Plastic Surgeon at Apollo Hospital. He became known for his meticulous skill, his compassionate approach, and his unwavering commitment to his patients.
Yet, a deeper dream was taking root. He envisioned a place that transcended the traditional clinic—a haven where technology and artistry could merge seamlessly with personalized, empathetic care. This vision became Life Aesthetics.
Co-founded with his wife, Dr. Anjali Dash, a distinguished gynecologist, Life Aesthetics was born from a philosophy of holistic well-being. It was designed to be a place where every person who walked through the door was seen, heard, understood and valued. It is this core belief that fuels Dr. Dash's famous motto: "Every patient of mine is a celebrity to me." For him, each individual's story and aspirations are paramount, deserving of a bespoke approach and the highest standard of care.
The Genesis of a Vision: Life and Aesthetics
The very name, "Life Aesthetics," is a testament to the dual passions of its founders, Dr. Ashwini Dash and his wife, Dr. Anjali. "Life is related to your pregnancy and... bringing up a new life - that speaks of my wife's work and my part is that of the aesthetic sense - a sense of beauty which is related to cosmetic surgery," Dr. Dash explains. His wife, a specialist in high-risk pregnancy and infertility, focuses on bringing new life into the world, while he dedicates himself to the art of cosmetic surgery.
The Challenges
The inception of Life Aesthetics was born out of a desire to address a significant gap in the healthcare landscape. Dr. Dash recognized that many hospitals lacked the dedicated infrastructure for cosmetic surgery, from initial counseling to the procedure itself. He envisioned a center that could not only provide expert medical care but also truly understand and address the cosmetic concerns of patients.
However, the initial journey was not without its hurdles. The name "Life Aesthetics" itself, an English term, was initially difficult for the local Hindi-speaking population to pronounce and comprehend. "Once you are not able to speak it properly, to understand it properly even becomes a difficult thing," Dr. Dash recalls. This challenge underscored the need for greater awareness, a mission that has been at the heart of their work for the past five years.
Bridging the Gap: Making Aesthetics Accessible
A core tenet of Life Aesthetics is to democratize cosmetic and high-risk pregnancy care, making it accessible beyond the affluent strata of society. "We are trying to make these things very much affordable to the people who are of the middle class or even lower class," Dr. Dash emphasizes.
This commitment has led to a tangible shift in their clientele over the last five years. Awareness has grown to the point where individuals from lower-income backgrounds, such as cooks and maids, now feel empowered to seek cosmetic corrections for aspects of their appearance they are unhappy with.
Recognizing that cosmetic surgery is typically not covered by insurance, Life Aesthetics has forged partnerships with finance companies. These collaborations offer patients the option of Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs) at minimal interest, making treatments more attainable. "That is the latest thing which we have included since the last two years," Dr. Dash notes, highlighting their continuous effort to break down financial barriers.
A Journey of Empathy: Learning from Patients
For Dr. Dash, every patient is a teacher. "We are learning from our patients all the time," he states, underscoring that his practice is a continuous learning curve shaped by the people he serves. He believes that half of what they practice today has been learned through direct interaction and understanding the unique psychological and social circumstances of each patient.
A pivotal moment in his career came from a deeply personal experience. About 14 years ago, Dr. Dash faced a severe illness and found himself in the position of a patient, lying on the very beds his patients occupy. "I was all the time thinking about the psychology of the patient who is lying there and waiting for his treatment to be done," he reflects. This profound experience reshaped his perspective, fostering a deep sense of empathy.
"Before that maybe I was working on a very mechanical basis... less connected to my patients but after that I started listening to people," he admits. Today, he makes it a point to listen intently to his patients, to understand their lives, their families, and their concerns, believing that a complete understanding is crucial before any treatment begins.
Restoring Trust: A Commitment to Transparency
One of the greatest challenges Dr. Dash sees in modern medical practice is the erosion of trust between doctors and patients. He is deeply concerned by the trend of non-medical personnel on commission making "false promises and false hopes" to lure patients into surgeries.
At Life Aesthetics, the philosophy is starkly different. "My philosophy is to establish that's why we make sure that the patient who turns in is counseled by myself or a doctor who knows the subject and then the patient has to be told everything in black and white," he asserts. Every potential outcome, side effect, and expense is clearly documented and requires the patient's signed consent. This unwavering commitment to transparency is his way of rebuilding the foundational trust that he believes is the bedrock of the medical profession.
Recognition and More…
Dr Dash was one of the winners of Upshot Brand Media’s iBelieve Award in 2022. When asked about recognition after receiving the award, he said, “The recognition I received significantly boosted my patient numbers and public profile. It was a valuable period because I connected with many individuals outside the medical field, including factory owners and goods manufacturers. This recognition was truly impactful. I recall a specific Women's Day where my wife was honored in the iRise Conclave and Awards, and I was felicitated on three separate occasions one of them being iBelieve. I am also grateful to UpshotBrand Media for introducing me to the corporate education sector, which led to me delivering lectures at several corporate training centers.”
The Road Ahead: Expansion and a Vision for the Future
Life Aesthetics, which began its journey in December 2017, has grown from a core team of two to a dedicated team of 25. They have expanded their services to include cosmetic dentistry, pathology, a specialized pharmacy, and advanced laser treatments.
The vision for the future is ambitious. Dr. Dash aims to create a state-of-the-art hospital that will house all services—from cosmetic surgery and women's health to post-operative care and rehabilitation—under the single banner of Life Aesthetics. The immediate future holds exciting developments, with a new partnership launching a cosmetic surgery and hair transplant center in the heart of Indore. Plans are also underway to expand to other cities, starting with Bhopal, to cater to a larger population.
For Dr. Ashwini Dash, the journey is far from over. From a young boy who was nudged into medicine by his doctor father to a seasoned practitioner who finds his greatest lessons in the stories of his patients, his path has been one of continuous evolution. His ultimate goal remains as clear as it is profound: to provide exceptional care at a reasonable cost and, most importantly, to uphold the sanctity of trust in the medical profession. As he aptly puts it, "I want to tell the truth and then do the treatment."
In a world where the pursuit of beauty often intersects with the profound journey of life, Dr. Ashwini Dash has carved a unique niche with his venture, Life Aesthetics. More than just a clinic, it represents a philosophy—a commitment to blending the art of aesthetic enhancement with the science of compassionate healthcare. This is the story of a doctor's journey, a narrative of bridging gaps, and a vision to restore faith in the sacred bond between a patient and their physician.
