In the bustling city of Indore, where the urban landscape typically dominates, a quiet revolution in dairy farming is taking place. Nestled on the serene banks of the Shipra river in Sanwer, Active Moo Farm is not just a commercial dairy; it's a testament to a philosophy that believes in "Healthy Cow, Happy Milk." This burgeoning enterprise is quickly gaining a reputation for its high-quality A2 cow milk and a transparent, technology-driven approach to dairy farming that is capturing the attention of health-conscious consumers and curious city dwellers alike.

From the glittering world of diamond jewelry to the rustic charm of dairy farming, the journey of Ankita and Sourabh Khabia, the founders of Active Moo Farms, is a tale of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to purity. What began as a husband's quest for a truthful and honest profession blossomed into a pioneering dairy venture that is redefining milk quality standards in Indore and beyond.

The Rocky Start

The seed for Active Moo was planted when Sourabh Khabia, feeling a disconnect with the family's jewelry business, yearned for a venture grounded in 100% truthfulness. His search led him to the unlikely field of dairy farming, an idea that initially took Ankita by surprise. "Do you realize in seven generations of us no one has done dairy farming?" she recalls asking her husband.

Despite the family's skepticism, Sourabh's determination was unwavering. He immersed himself in learning the trade, traveling to various institutes to understand the dairy industry. To test his resolve, his father-in-law arranged a grueling internship at a goshala, instructing the manager to make the experience so difficult that Sourabh would abandon the idea within three days. The manager was even told his salary was on the line.

However, the challenges only fueled Sourabh's passion. He embraced the hard work, from planning the diet for a herd of 30 cows to cleaning the cow dung himself. Instead of being deterred by rashes and exhaustion, he returned home each day with exciting stories of his learnings. This unwavering enthusiasm convinced his wife Ankita to join him on this unconventional path.

The Initial Trickle

Together, they set out to build a dairy farm that was different. They addressed Ankita's concerns about hygiene by visiting fly-free farms and learning the science behind maintaining a clean environment. They consciously chose Indore as their base, drawn by its fertile land and Hindi-speaking population, after ruling out Mumbai due to high land costs and Rajasthan due to its arid conditions. They purchased land near the Narmada River to ensure a year-round water supply for their cows.

Their approach to building their herd was equally meticulous. Instead of buying milking cows, they invested in heifers, wanting to work on strengthening their DNA from the start. It took a patient nine months before their first cow produced milk. That first batch of milk, delivered by Sourabh on their anniversary, was distributed as samples in their society, and the positive feedback was immediate.

This marked the beginning of Ankita's deep involvement in the administration and marketing of Active Moo Farms. While Sourabh handled the farm, Ankita took charge of packaging, deliveries, and managing surplus milk, even making ghee at home for the first three years.

Ankita Khabia explained that the name "Active Moo" is a direct reflection of the brand's philosophy. The "Moo" playfully points to the source of their product – cows. The "Active" component stems from their in-depth research, which solidified their belief in the superior benefits of cow's milk over buffalo's milk for fostering an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Scientific input

For years, the founders of Active Moo Farm honed their expertise by providing dairy consultation services. This experience gave them a unique insight into the industry's challenges and opportunities. Armed with this knowledge and a passion for animal welfare, they embarked on a journey to establish their own farm—one that would set a new benchmark for quality and ethical practices.

What truly sets Active Moo Farm apart, however, is its holistic approach to dairy farming. The farm's mantra, "Healthy Cow, Happy Milk," is not just a catchy slogan; it's a principle that guides their daily operations. The cows are housed in a comfortable and clean environment, and their well-being is meticulously monitored. In a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity, the farm utilizes technology to keep a close watch on the health and happiness of its herd. This includes tracking the cows' dietary intake and activity levels to ensure they are thriving.

The results of this dedicated care are evident in the quality of their products, which extend beyond fresh milk to include rich and aromatic ghee. Customer testimonials frequently praise the taste, freshness, and purity of Active Moo Farm's offerings, with many noting a discernible difference from mass-produced alternatives.

The cornerstone of Active Moo Farm's offering is its A2 cow milk, a variety of milk that is believed to be easier to digest for many people compared to the more common A1 milk. This focus on a niche and premium product has allowed the farm to carve out a dedicated customer base that values purity and nutritional benefits.

Their commitment to quality was uncompromising.  They were the first in Madhya Pradesh to launch highly nutritious milk, rich in Vitamin B12 and iron, without any adulteration. They also introduced lactose-free milk to cater to a wider range of consumers. Their focus on animal welfare is evident in their use of technology imported from Israel, such as Fitbits for cows to monitor their health, and providing tailor-made diets for each cow.

Today, Active Moo Farms supplies milk to between 750 and 1,000 customers in Indore and sells ghee pan-India through Amazon and distributors. Their team consists of approximately 12 people at the farm and a small administrative staff.

The Future Moo

Beyond its products, Active Moo Farm offers an experience. Its picturesque location and the visible commitment to its animals make it an appealing destination for those looking to reconnect with the source of their food. The farm stands as a transparent entity, welcoming inquiries and fostering a sense of trust with its patrons.

When UBM Team inquired about the market's evolution since Ankita Khabia's winning the iBelieve Award in 2022. Ankita confirmed a substantial change, stating that by 2025, "people are more aware now." She elaborated that consumers better understand what constitutes genuine A2 cow milk, recognizing that packaging alone isn't a guarantee. This increased education means that new consumers, such as the next generation of daughter-in-laws, are proactively choosing A2 milk, significantly reducing the company's need for "push marketing."

As the demand for natural and ethically produced food continues to grow, Active Moo Farm is well-positioned to lead the way in Indore's dairy scene. It's a story of passion, innovation, and a deep-rooted respect for nature—a story that is not just about milk, but about a healthier and more conscious way of living. For the residents of Indore and beyond, Active Moo Farm is more than just a brand; it's a promise of purity, straight from their happy herd to the consumer's home.

Having established a benchmark in quality dairy farming, the Khabias are now expanding their vision. They have their sights on Anand with the aim of collaborating with Amul to educate and consult other farmers on producing high-quality milk profitably and ethically. They are currently consulting with 27 farms across India which include farms from Gujarat, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune.

Ankita Khabia's journey from the world of design and marketing to the forefront of the dairy revolution is a testament to the power of a shared dream and an unshakeable belief in doing things the right way. As she aptly puts it, "You have to decide mindfully that you want to invest in good health today or better treatment in future".
